Referring to the drawings, an embodiment of the WiffleNet according to the present invention comprises of an elliptical-shaped synthetic fabric with a flat backstop that contains a strikezone aperture embedded therein. The base is preferably six feet (6′) wide and the height of the backstop is preferably six feet (6′) tall. The elliptical shape is formed and supported by a collapsible and coilable frame member or flat wire , which can be collapsed by twisting, folding and/or bending while still retaining pitchers pocket its original elliptical shape . The coilable and collapsible nature of the member facilitates pop-up assembly, disassembly and portability of the invention. You don’t need a catcher or even a coach for a bullpen session when you have baseball and softball pitching targets from Bownet. This 9-hole pitching net attachment can be added to the original Big Mouth X® training net as well as most other 7′ x 7′ Bownet training nets, including the Hitting Station, Soft Toss X practice net and In-Fielder.

The directions also suggested using an area 20 feet by approximately 60 feet, with scoring areas spaced away from the batter at 20-feet intervals. Hit a ball that lands uncaught up to 20 feet from home plate and you score a single. A distance of 21–40 feet is a double, 41–60 feet is a triple, and launch one more than 60 feet uncaught and you clear the bases without running a step. Of course, most of us had our own ground rules, which made a game of Wiffle Ball even more fun and uniquely our own. The Mullanys had purchased an injection molding machine to make the very first Wiffle balls in a manufacturing process that was fairly straightforward.

Since it’s possible to throw everything including a curveball, slider and knuckle ball, as well as a straight pitch, Wiffle ball is a pitcher’s game. Back in the old days, when you struck out, you “wiffed,” hence the name. Not one to give up easily, Mullany found a plastic practice golfball in his father’s golfbag and pressed that into service.

Instead of buying one, we kicked off the summer by following your design and building our own. It’s been a great couple weeks of wiffle ball, so I wanted to thank you. The first ball, known then as the Little League size (today, it’s the Junior size), was soon joined by a larger Baseball and then a still larger Softball version.

If enough teams are present, 16 teams will advance to the bracket. On the top and bottom (24″ edges), I punched holes at 3″, 12″, and 21″ across. Especially on the bottom, these measurements are important, because you don’t want your drill holes to be over the Tees that connect to the base. At this point, you could say you’re done with the frame, but I highly recommend painting it. Pick your favorite team colors, or just go with black.

A pitch which hits the batter on the fly, if the thrown pitch would have likely traveled into the strikezone but for hitting the batter. The BacKstop is designed for use with Wiffle balls and other hardball substitutes and is sold as a full kit ⏤ with either a traditional yellow bat and three balls or big red bat and three softballs ⏤ for $50. According to David A. Mullany, President of The Wiffle Ball Inc., it all started in the early 1950s, in Fairfield, Conn., when Mullany and a few of his school chums got into hot water playing baseball in the local schoolyard. The yard was so small, they often broke the school windows, which, in turn, drew the attention of the police. Long before baseball became our National Pastime, it was a pastoral game played in wide open spaces. As its popularity grew, baseball spread into our suburbs and cities.

This unlikely outlet sold the Wiffle ball from its front window at the 1953 price of 49 cents. A humble start for sure, but one that led to orders from local sporting goods stores.
