After successful completion of the FAMTP, participants then report to duty as incumbent air marshals and are required to complete 160 hours of recurrent training courses annually. As noted by the GAO, these ongoing training courses ensure that air marshals constantly sharpen tactical skills which are necessary for action in the line of duty. If potential terrorists know their identity, they know which person to target first. No one else besides the air marshall on the aircraft may be equipped to stop them. Even on long-haul flights, air marshals aren’t allowed to sleep. They have to remain awake and alert at all times to assess threats and react in the case of a potential highjacking.
