If you have ever gotten your hair dyed before, you probably know the common rule that you are not to wash your hair for the first 24 hours. This is because the dye is still settling in your hair and the strands are still closing. However, if you do want to dump some of your color, the first day is the best time to do it. If you did the color at home with a drugstore brand, beware! Some of them are classified as “direct dyes,” meaning that they may contain metallic ingredients that do not cooperate with color remover or bleach. Because of this, it’s important that you inform your stylist about what kind you used upfront.

You can also use lemon juice or baking soda instead of vitamin c powder. You may need to repeat this process a few times to get the desired result. When hair is already dark, it can be harder to achieve lighter shades – the dark color will often show through, resulting in a darker overall hue. If you are using a dye remover, do not combine the remover with any hair bleaching products. The two chemicals cause a harmful reaction and a color that you may not like.

After using a color remover, always choose a dye that is 1 or 2 shades lighter than you actually want. You’re likely to see a strange hair color after removing the dark dye, so you’ll need to finish the process by coloring your hair again. Baking soda’s pH is much higher than your hair and scalp’s (5.5), so it can be really disruptive and leave your hair feeling damaged or straw-like with too much use. The first choice you need to make is whether you’ll use natural or chemical means to lighten your hair dye. In fact, you probably already have the ingredients for some of the natural methods at home!

Continue to wash your hair every day for the first week and a half. However, to keep your hair healthy, be sure to let your hair rest once you start getting close to your desired shade. ‘This will take out some of the heaviness from the ends. ‘These will help to remove colour build-up and ideally, over time lighten the hair a little.

Cover with a plastic cap and leave on for one hour. Mix two tablespoons of honey and one tablespoon of cinnamon with your favorite conditioner to create a mask. Leave on for 20 minutes balayage sectioning to one hour while in the sun. Apply all over hair and cover with a plastic cap. Well, the real step one is probably more like “breathe,” but after you’ve taken a deep breath, speak up.

Condition your hair afterwards to prevent breakage and damage. You may want to apply a deep conditioning hair mask. If you have to use a lightener, please consider working with a bond rebuilder while lightening the hair. This will help push the results further and avoid compromising the condition too much. My favorite on the market is Olaplex, I notice a significant difference in the condition of the lightened hair whilst using this bond rebuilder. Bleaches can lift color up to 9 levels, depending on color history so bleach is a powerful product.
