Philosophy and theology courses as needed; nine credits of contextual analysis courses, unless taken as general electives in the M.A. Generally speaking, contextual analysis courses should be selected with a view to their relevance for the student’s capstone project. ‡Students preparing for eventual ordination are expected to complete additional PPF philosophy courses as pre- or co-requisites of the M.A. Students will be able to discuss connections among major thinkers and ideas that have shaped the history of philosophy and theology.
By the end of the sixth semester of study, the student should have taken 45 credits of coursework. Applications are reviewed by a committee of philosophy department faculty members. Consistent with the Council of Graduate Schools “April 15” resolution, no student will be required to make a final decision to accept or reject an offer of funding prior to April 15. This roadmap should not be used in the place of regular academic advising appointments.
Course requirements for all programs are designed to provide students with the background concepts and methodological tools to engage issues of faith and justice in dialogue with culture. SLU-Madrid offers a full range of courses in philosophy, including courses on Spanish philosophy, medical ethics, business ethics, the meaning of life and Latin American philosophy. Courses that fulfill the university’s liberal arts core requirements count toward both the philosophy major and minor and enhance the study-abroad experience for visiting students. Beginning in Fall 2018, seminary collegians have pursued their B.A.
3Total Credits47†Pastoral and Spiritual Theology are understood to include both theological and practice-oriented courses in these areas. A course in liturgical theology may substitute for either the Pastoral Theology or Spiritual Theology requirement. Students will be able to analyze challenges in the contexts of ministry using philosophy, theology, and other relevant sources of knowledge . Students will be able to assess relevant literature in philosophy and theology. For almost two centuries, SLU has promoted philosophical thinking in the Jesuit-Catholic tradition. SLU-Madrid’s program in philosophy is characterized by a pluralism of methodologies and interests.
The college currently admits Jesuit students, students studying for ordination as archdiocesan clergy, and students of other Catholic religious orders, congregations and institutes. It is also open to admitting laypersons with an interest in philosophical preparation for ministry. In 1934, the college was approved by the Sacred Congregation for Catholic Education did sza have plastic surgery as a reserved ecclesiastical faculty for philosophy. In the fall of 1975, the purpose of the College of Philosophy and Letters was expanded to include all pre-ministerial programs at Saint Louis University. For students who already have a degree, this certificate program satisfies the philosophical requirements for ordination in the Catholic priesthood.
In addition, students may engage in the many service opportunities offered through Saint Louis University, which is a national leader in student service. Admission requirements for each candidate’s religious order or diocese in the area of academic achievement, personal character and spiritual ideals must be met.
